The Story of the Electric Fireplace
It may surprise you that electric fireplaces are not a recent invention and their history is interesting. Electric fireplaces were first used in the theater as props as early as 1912 because they were light and required no fuel. Most of them in the early years did not create their own flame.
Who invented the electric fireplace?
Sources currently available to us do not give a clear idea of who invented the electric fireplace. A quick internet search would tell you that Benjamin Franklin invented the electric fireplace. However, this answer can be misleading. Benjamin Franklin only invented the fireplace stove, which was made of cast iron. This invention allows the stove to emit heat more efficiently. It is a certain fact that Dimplex first patented electric fire and flickering flame in 1995
Electric fireplaces between 1912 and 1985
The first electric fireplaces were too impractical to begin with. Also, they were too expensive to install and maintain. Although they warmed homes as efficiently as conventional wood and gas fireplaces, electric fireplaces were not widely adopted. Another drawback was the fact that few households had electricity in the early years of the previous century, making electric fireplaces less popular.
However, three factors have aided the growing acceptance of the Electric Fireplace in the market, namely:
1. Electric fireplaces reduce the chances of fires.
2. Electric fireplaces were promoted by the US government during the Cold War era to showcase the glamor of America and the "Free World"
3. Creating the flickering flame effect from Dimplex.
The difference between Electric fireplaces before and now
Consumption.
The energy consumption of electric fireplaces (then and now) varies based on several factors. For the most part, in modern times, the amount of heat produced by the fireplace determines how much power it will consume. Electric fireplaces use an average of 1500 watts of power. It is important to note that the figures decrease if you use it only for a pleasant atmosphere and not for heating.
The scenario is completely different for the first generation of electric fireplaces. If the energy consumption levels were no different than what we have now, it would certainly be much more expensive to use because electricity was not that popular back then.
